Barber shop moves downtown

TERRE HAUTE — An old name to the barbering trade moves up the street to a new location downtown.

Work was still under way inside John Stadler’s Barber Shop at 509 Wabash Ave., as the owner explained his move from the old 1402 Wabash address which placed him in the middle of this summer’s road construction.

“I moved for a better location,” Stadler said, noting he went to work inside a building of eclectic usage the day after Labor Day. “I like being downtown. I’m glad I got this spot.”

Most recently used as headquarters for the Vigo County Democrat Party, the building now sports a traditional barber pole and signage, indicating its workers can offer shaves as well as cuts. Stadler said licensed barbers can cut closer to the scalp, a big difference from beauticians.

The new business is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Louis Britton, an attorney with Cox, Zwerner, Gambill & Sullivan LLP, said the firm which owns the building is glad to have a new tenant, one they hope will remain a long time.

“I am pleased to see a new business downtown. The downtown has made great strides over the past several years,” Britton said.
