Monday’s Lunch with a Lawyer features Judge Newton

TERRE HAUTE — The next Lunch with a Lawyer is set for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday at the Wabash Senior Activity Center at 300 S. Fifth St. in Terre Haute.

The featured speaker will be Judge Christopher A. “Chris” Newton from Terre Haute. He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Indiana State University and Juris Doctorate from the Brigham Young University J. Reuben Clark School of Law. For 15 years, he worked for the Terre Haute law firm of Wright, Shagley & Lowery.

Newton was first elected Judge of Vigo Superior Court, Division 4 in November 2004 and was re-elected in November 2010.

Division 4 Court has the largest caseload by volume than any of the other five Superior Courts in the county, handling all domestic violence cases, most protection orders and 66 percent of all small claims filed in the county. He has worked with the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office, the Public Defender’s Office, and the Council on Domestic Abuse to educate victims and defendants on how to break the cycle of violence.

Judge Newton serves on the Chinese School of the Wabash Valley and Catholic Charities of Terre Haute Board of Directors. As a young man, Judge Newton served as a missionary in Taiwan—Republic of China and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. He is also Bishop of the Honey Creek Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints. In this capacity, Newton helped organize more than 15,000 volunteer hours during June and July 2007 after floods ravished Vigo County.

A question and answer period will follow Judge Newton’s presentation.

A complimentary lunch will be provided courtesy of Cloverleaf Healthcare, of Nightsville.

Lunch with a Lawyer is a free educational program, sponsored by Senior Education Ministries, Inc., that welcomes the local senior public to hear the lawyer of the month provide an educational legal presentation, while having lunch.

Space is limited and reservations are required by calling 812-232-7575.
