UAP Clinic CEO leaving post to join medical group in Phoenix

Mindy Smith, chief executive officer of UAP Clinic, is resigning from the post and has accepted a new position in Arizona.

Smith will be the chief operating officer at Banner Medical Group in Phoenix, which is the physician organization of Banner Health system, according to a statement from Patrick S. Board, Union Health System chief executive officer.

In Phoenix, Smith will oversee a 1,200-physician group operating in seven states. She will start in that position Nov. 1.

UAP had announced Smith’s appointment as its CEO in June; she replaced Board, who assumed his duties as Union Health System CEO in December.

“She advised me that she was not actively searching when contacted by Banner about this position. She had interviewed with the same organization in the same time frame that she interviewed with UAP and had declined a position managing Banner’s East Valley Region in Phoenix.

“Recent changes in that organization resulted in vacating the COO position and the Banner CEO initiated contact with Mindy to see if that position would be of interest. She describes the position as a ‘career opportunity’ and one that she could not pass up,” Board wrote in a statement to employees earlier this week.

According to Board, Smith expressed regret that her tenure at UAP has been so short and she will assist in the short term with necessary transition. She will remain with UAP through the end of this week, Board wrote.

Dr. Krishna Namburi was to convene a special meeting of the UAP board and AP&S management committee this week to discuss transition, interim management and a new search, Board wrote.
