TERRE HAUTE —
Over the course of this year, I have discussed on several occasions the Chamber’s Strategic Initiatives and specifically, the need to create a quality workforce. Our membership set the following strategic initiative for us to accomplish: We wish to break the cycle of poverty by elevating the skills of people in the local community to enter the workforce. A key issue to be addressed was assisting local industry in finding employees for existing openings.
Last week, the Chamber took a critical step forward in helping fulfill the goal of putting qualified employees in touch with the employers who need them through the announcement of a community-wide workforce development program, NationJob. The central focus of this initiative is to attract the best candidates for employment opportunities in the Terre Haute community.
The most important part of our announcement was focused on a free benefit we can now offer small businesses. Thanks to the support of our featured employers, companies with 30 or less employees are now able to participate completely free of charge.
By partnering with NationJob, a company with a proven record and more than 20 years of experience in working with communities across the nation, we can now bring this program to our members and save them time and money in finding qualified employees.
The Terre Haute job site can be accessed at
www.terrehautechamber.com, and by clicking on the “Local Job Site” button on the main page.
The list of current featured employers, includes: ADVICS Manufacturing Indiana, L.L.C., Cadillac Products Packaging Company, Clabber Girl Corp., Columbian Home Products, LLC, Hamilton Center, Inc., Harrison College, Indiana State University, Old National Bank, Taghleef Industries, Inc., Thompson Thrift, Tri Aerospace and Union Hospital.
Since the program’s start in April of this year, more than 300 local jobs have been posted on the website. Those local jobs have been viewed in excess of 62,000 times and 1,420 jobs have been clicked on to submit a resume or apply for the job, according to statistics provided by NationJob.
For more information on how your business can participate in the program, contact NationJob directly at 888-256-1741. For more information about the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, call 812-232-2391 or visit www.terrehaute
While we are very excited about the launch of this program we realize there is more that needs to be accomplished to truly fulfill our goal. To that end, we have established a Steering Council for the workforce development efforts of the Chamber. This group consists of close to 20 individuals who are involved in a diverse range of workforce development efforts throughout the community. The next focus will be determining how to best assist current workforce development programs at the K-12 and community college levels.
To support our other strategic initiatives, we are representing the needs of businesses by creating and supporting growth opportunities, education and training, providing regular communication, serving as advocates and providing opportunities for social interaction.
On Thursday, we will host a Time Management Strategies brown bag seminar as part of our ongoing BIZ Seminar Series, sponsored by Union Hospital. This seminar will focus on ways to be more organized and minimize interruptions. It is presented in partnership with the West Central Indiana Small Business Development Center and is free of charge to their clients, Chamber members, Wabash Valley HR Association Members and Terre Haute Young Leaders. It will be at 11:30 a.m. July 25 at the Chamber, 630 Wabash Ave, Suite 105.
In addition, we are hosting a Family Business After Hours with The Terre Rex on July 31. This event is sponsored by The Copper Bar. It’s casual networking in a family environment. Tickets are $5 per person and includes a mostaccioli dinner and admission to the game.
It’s hard to believe, but we are only 49 days away from our 100th Annual Meeting. This year’s event will be a celebration of the past, present and future of the Terre Haute business community and specifically, how doing business in Terre Haute has changed over the past 100 years. We have a special evening planned which includes transporting our members back in time with the help of the Vigo County Historical Society and honoring the present by recognizing businesses and individuals who are contributing to our community through our four award presentations. The evening will be capped off by our featured speaker, American Entrepreneur Bill Rancic. He is the perfect speaker for an event like this as he will tie in his personal business experience, leadership characteristics and business success tips for navigating change; all of which contribute to the future success of any business large or small.
Registration for all these events is available online at www.terrehautechamber.com or by calling (812) 232-2391.
