TERRE HAUTE — Members of the 72nd Indiana State Police Recruit School reported on April 8 to the ISP Youth Education and Historical Center in Indianapolis to receive their police commissions. The 47 new troopers have been assigned to various state police districts throughout Indiana since their graduation on Dec. 21.

Before receiving new commissions, the troopers received approximately 917 hours of structured training at the ISP school at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield. The troopers then completed a three-month field training period with seasoned troopers, during which they were observed applying the knowledge and training gained in the academy to real-life situations.

Troopers Ian M. Portteus and Erik S. Smith have been assigned to the Putnamville Post.

Portteus, age 24, is an Owen County native and graduate of Owen Valley High School. He attended Indiana University-Purdue University of Indianapolis. Portteus is an avid car and motorcycle enthusiast, enjoys music and is a worship leader at his local church. He and his wife reside in Owen County. Trooper Portteus will be assigned patrol duties in Clay County.

Smith, age 30, is a Sullivan County native and a graduate of Sullivan High School. Smith served in the United States Air Force from 2003 to 2011 with tours in Japan and Iraq. He is a sports enthusiast and volunteers as a boy’s basketball coach for Terre Haute South High School. Before his acceptance in the ISP school, Smith served as a Vigo County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Officer for two years. He and his wife reside in Vigo County. Trooper Smith will be assigned patrol duties in Sullivan County.

Rockville Correctional Facility Superintendent Julie Stout announced the promotion of Captain Roger Chapman, effective April 3.

Chapman, a father of two, began his career as a correctional officer with the Rockville Correctional Facility in 2004. He was promoted to sergeant in 2007 and lieutenant in 2012. He has served as an active emergency squad member since 2005. In this role, he has served as the Alpha team leader since 2010.

Chapman is a 2012 graduate of the Indiana Department of Correction Leadership Academy and is currently completing the commissioner’s Experienced and Emerging Leaders program. He also served in the United States Navy from 1990 to 1994 as an E-4.

Paris Community Hospital/Family Medical Center has welcomed Steven Macke, M.D., as a full-time provider in the Paris Family Medical Center.

Dr. Macke is a board-certified physician from Clark County with 34 years of experience in family practice medicine, including Carle clinic in Mattoon, where he had practiced since 2009.

Before Carle, Macke practiced at Cork Medical Center in Marshall, Ill., from 1979 to 2009. He was also medical director at Burnsides Nursing Home/Burnsides Community Health Center in Marshall from 1992 to 2009.

Macke earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford, Ill. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Eastern Illinois University and is a graduate of Marshall High School. He is a diplomat of the American Academy of Family Physicians, a member and Past Alternate Delegate of the Illinois State Medical Society, and a member of the Clark County Medical Society.

Macke and his wife, Beth, have three children and five granddaughters. He is a member of the rotary club and First United Methodist Church in Marshall.

Macke will be located in Suite A in the Paris Family Medical Center and will attend patients ages two and older. His office hours will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Thursday and Friday; from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday; and 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesday.
