Register now for Rebuilding Together

Registration for individuals wishing to volunteer for the Christmas in April and Rebuilding Together work day will take place from 7 to 8 a.m. Saturday in Chauncey Rose Middle School, 1275 Third Ave.

Rebuilding Together is an annual one-day event designed to repair homes of low-income homeowners, in particular the elderly and disabled who are unable to afford or perform the work themselves. All repairs are paid for by the Rebuilding Together program at no cost to the homeowner.

Anyone 14 or older can be a volunteer.

Volunteers may be interested individuals and groups, businesses, schools, community service organizations, corporations and associations. They do not need to have home repair skills.

Rebuilding Together performs repairs in the following areas: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, plastering, painting, weather stripping, landscaping and general cleaning.

The one-day event makes a difference in the lives of the homeowners and volunteers.

White Owl Winery wins more medals

Three more wines have taken awards for White Owl Winery, this time in the 23rd Annual Pacific Rim International Wine Competition held last week in San Bernardino, Calif.

The latest wines to take medals for White Owl Winery are:

• Watermelon: Gold

• Cherry Pie: Silver

• Spiced Pear: Bronze

“This is our first gold medal of the year,” said co-owner Joy Neighbors. “The Watermelon wine has never been entered in a competition, and for it to score a gold medal the first time around just proves how great it is.”

Since White Owl’s Watermelon wine won a gold, it will be poured at the 93rd Annual National Orange Show, in San Bernardino May 22-26 at the Wine Pavilion. It will also be made available to attendees at the Wine and Food Under the Stars Fundraiser in October in California.

According to Yolanda Daly, Director of the wine competition, the judging panel consisted of 33 judges from the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The Pacific Rim Competition represents wines from North and South America, New Zealand and Australia.

White Owl Winery/Purgatory Cellars is 10 miles northwest of Vincennes on the Illinois side of the Wabash River. For more information contact Joy Neighbors at joy@whiteowlwinery.com.

‘Breaking the Silence’ conference planned

The Domestic Violence Network of Greater Indianapolis is hosting a one-day conference for employers titled “Breaking the Silence in the Workplace.”

The conference is 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Monday in The Sheraton Hotel Downtown Indianapolis.

The keynote speaker for the conference is Yvette Cade, a nationally recognized speaker and domestic violence workplace survivor. On Oct. 10, 2005, Cade’s estranged husband came into her T-Mobile store and set her on fire. She suffered severe burns, but did not die.

Cade has appeared in several national television programs, telling her story, including Nancy Grace, Oprah Winfrey, Inside Edition and Video Justice. Her story has been told in The Washington Post, The New York Times, People Magazine, Essence Magazine and publications in Europe.

Cade received the Congressional Victims Rights Caucus Award from Congressman Ted Poe (Texas), which recognizes a crime victim/survivor who has taken a personal tragedy to triumph over adversity.

She testified before the Congressional Committee in support of a bill for domestic violence victims rights and has spoken before numerous groups who champion victims’ rights.

The conference will provide employers with information and education about how to (1) implement workplace policies and practices to support the work force, (2) understand the financial impact of domestic abuse to employers, (3) access community resources, materials and tools.
