UPDATE: Brazil woman dies in 4-vehicle crash near Seelyville

SEELYVILLE — A four-vehicle crash in eastern Vigo County led to the death of a 51-year-old Brazil woman Thursday evening.

The Indiana State Police report that Karen S. Price of Brazil was pronounced dead at the scene of the multi-vehicle crash, which took place near 8703 Wabash Ave. (U.S. 40) on the west edge of Seelyville at about 7:12 p.m.

A preliminary investigation indicated that an eastbound Toyota SUV driven by Catherine M. Burk, 25, of Brazil lost control and left the roadway on the south side. It then returned to the roadway, crossed the center line and struck a westbound Dodge pickup truck driven by Vance Smith, 23, of Terre Haute. Smith’s vehicle then struck the eastbound Ford Focus being driven by Price. The Price vehicle was then forced into the westbound lanes where it was struck broadside on the passenger side by a Chevrolet pickup being driven by William P. Hastings, 46, of Terre Haute.

Burk was not injured in the incident, and a medical episode may have been a factor in her losing control of her vehicle, according to the ISP.

Vance Smith also was not injured. Hastings was taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for treatment of what were believed to be minor injuries.

The roadway was wet at the time of the crash, the state police said. All occupants were wearing seat belts, and drugs and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash. No citations were issued.

In addition to the state police, the Seelyville-Lost Creek Township Fire/Rescue Department, Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, Trans-Care and the Vigo County Coroner’s office all responded to the scene.
