Tragedy: 3-year-old dies after being found in parked pickup
TERRE HAUTE —
Investigation continues today into the tragic death of a 3-year-old child who was discovered Friday afternoon inside a pickup truck parked at a downtown business, authorities said.
“It’s still under investigation,” Vigo County Prosecutor Terry Modesitt said this morning.
Vigo County Coroner Susan Amos said this morning that an autopsy is schedule to be conducted on Monday by Dr. Roland Kohr, a forensic pathologist. Preliminary autopsy results may also be available on Monday, Amos said.
“It’s a terrible tragedy,” Amos said.
At about 2:39 p.m. Friday, the Terre Haute Police Department responded to Vectren. 475 S. First St., upon receiving a report of a possibly deceased child.
Police said the child was found unresponsive inside a pickup truck on Vectren’s west parking lot, and that the child was transported to Union Hospital by Terre Haute Fire Department ambulance.
Attempts to revive the child were unsuccessful, and the child died a few minutes later, police said.
Police investigation found that the pickup truck belonged to the child's father, a Vectren employee, who had arrived at work about 10:30 a.m. Friday, police said.
Police said the father and witnesses told them the child would normally have been dropped off at a nearby daycare, and that the father did not realize the child was still in the vehicle when he arrived at work, police said.
“Don’t forget to check your kids in the back seat,” Amos said.
According to weather.com, Terre Haute’s high was 95 degrees yesterday, nine degrees above average. The low was 65 degrees.
The cause of death has not been determined and more information will be posted as it becomes available.
