FATAL CRASH UPDATE: Terre Haute woman killed in Sunday crash; husband in stable condition

TERRE HAUTE — City police have released the names of two people involved in Sunday’s fatal car accident on North 16th Street near Carl Avenue.

Peggy Compton, 53, was killed in the accident. She had been a passenger in a car driven by her husband, Wayne R. Compton, 44, who was listed in stable condition at Methodist Hospital this afternoon.

The Comptons are from Terre Haute.

Police officers responded to a report of a single-vehicle accident at 2:15 a.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, they found that a 2008 Chevrolet Impala had come to rest where 16th Street dead-ends at a creek between Florida and Carl avenues.

Witnesses told police the vehicle was traveling north at a high rate of speed when they heard the crash.

Terre Haute fire personnel arrived on the scene and determined that Peggy Compton had died. She was a CNA at the Terre Haute Nursing Home.

Wayne Compton was airlifted from the scene to Methodist.
