GOP taps opponent to face Kersey

Rose-Hulman assistant facility director enters race for House District 43

TERRE HAUTE — Lacking a primary election candidate, the Indiana State Republican Party elected Alan Morrison in a June 7 caucus to run against incumbent Rep. Clyde Kersey, D-Terre Haute, in the Nov. 2 general election for House District 43.

Morrison, 33, is in his 10th year as assistant facility director at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management with a concentration in business administration from Slippery Rock University in 2000. He earned a master’s degree in recreation and sports management from Indiana State University in 2005.

Morrison previously served as corporate account executive and director of game day operations for the Flint Generals hockey team for one year.

“Americans have been great, with every generation making life better for the next, but recent trends” could reverse that, Morrison said.

“I look at the way that government is growing. I am a firm believer in limited government. I think entrepreneurial capitalism is what has made America great. You do that through limited taxes and creating opportunities, not outcome. I believe that is the role of government and I want to see us get back to that,” Morrison said.

Morrison said he supports the property tax caps that will go before Hoosier voters in November in a referendum vote. “I believe the more money we keep in our pockets, the better. We know how to spend our money,” he said.

This election marks the first time Morrison has sought an elected office.

Morrison and his wife, Cinda, have two children, Katelyn, 5, and Derek, who turns 3 in July.

Kersey, 72, was first elected to the Indiana House in 1996. He is a retired teacher and served on the Vigo County Council from 1986 to 1996. Kersey defeated Republican Ryan J. Cummins in the 2008 general election.

Kersey said he “expects to have an opponent in every election, which allows you to debate issues and get your side out, so I look forward to the campaign.”
