Police probe Sunday afternoon abduction

Following is a news release from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department seeking help in investigating a reported abduction on Sunday afternoon:

+++

Vigo County Sheriff’s detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying individuals wanted for questioning in an abduction of a 15-year-old female in southern Vigo County.

According to Vigo County Chief Deputy Clark Cottom, at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, a female juvenile was inside her southern Vigo County residence when she heard a knock at the door.

The female opened the door because the individual was holding a box and appeared to be a delivery person. As she stepped outside, the male attempted to grab her.  She immediately ran back inside, and the male followed her inside the house. She reports that she ran out the door in an attempt to get away.

Once outside she states she was confronted by second male. She states the second male displayed a knife and both males then forced her inside a van.

She was in the van for an undetermined amount of time. The males later released her within a mile of her home. She states a passerby gave her a ride home.

The suspect vehicle was described as cargo-style minivan, with faded burgundy paint. She described the exterior as dull with no shine.

She felt certain the van had some sort of white lettering on it. She said it had the letter “K” in it, and believed the “K” was larger than the rest of the lettering.

She states the van's interior was dark, and the floor had a plywood covering.

Detectives showed the female several pictures of cargo vans and she believes the vehicle could be a Chevrolet Astro cargo van.

(See accompanying photo, which is a picture of a similar vehicle to aid in identification.)

Suspect number one is white male, 5'8", mid-20s to early 30s, black cargo pants, blue belt, black polo shirt, black Nike hat with blue swoosh symbol, dark Oakley-style glasses, brown goatee and black gloves.

Suspect number two is described as white male, 5'8" to 5'10", mid-20s to early 30s, medium-length curly (bushy) brown hair and dark clothing.

The female was transported to Regional Hospital where she was later treated and released.

Detectives spent several hours interviewing the female and witnesses, while patrol deputies combed a residential area off Harlan Road, just east of Hoosier Prairie Elementary School, for the suspects.

Cottom said the two male suspects should be considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information about the two suspects or a similar vehicle should immediately call the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office at 812-462-3226 or anonymously at 812-238-STOP.
