Katelyn Wolfe homicide: Affidavit alleges men’s scheme

BLOOMFIELD — Two friends from childhood allegedly had devised a plan over the course of about a week to rape and kill someone — without having a particular target — before causing Linton teenager Katelyn Wolfe’s death last week, according to court documents released Thursday.

Jordan W. Buskirk, 26, and Randal E. Crosley, 25, both of Jasonville, are scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court today to face charges of murder and criminal confinement in the death of Wolfe, 19, whose duct tape-bound body was recovered Monday from a rural Sullivan County lake.

Buskirk told police that “it was just something that popped in their heads” and that the initial plan of Buskirk and Crossly was “to rape and then murder,” according to the probable cause affidavit signed late Wednesday by Judge Dena Martin.

Buskirk and Crosley both have been charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit rape and criminal confinement. Crosley also faces two charges of dealing in a controlled substance.

The court documents allege the men picked Wolfe up near her home on June 5, then later pulled her from the car and attacked her along a rural road before dumping her body.

Both men are jailed without bond in the Greene County Jail in Bloomfield.

Wolfe’s father reported her missing June 6, about 20 hours after she was last seen walking in Linton. Her body was found attached to a 20-pound weight in the lake, and an autopsy showed she died from asphyxia from smothering, according to the court documents.

According to the affidavits, Buskirk told investigators he and Crosley killed Wolfe early on June 6 along a Greene County road. They then placed her body in the trunk of Buskirk’s car and drove around getting high, intending to conduct a drug deal that didn’t work out, before arriving at the lake.

During that ride, Buskirk told officers, Crosley used Wolfe’s cellphone to update her Facebook account and send text messages from it “to try to cover their tracks,” according to the affidavit.

The Facebook update, appearing to look as if Wolfe had posted it, stated: “Trying to party looking for fun. Out on a walk with creeps that keep driving by,” according to the court documents.

Buskirk told officers he and Crosley sold Wolfe some Valium pills on June 5, and that Crosley sent her a text later that night, making arrangements to pick her up near her home in Linton. After picking her up about 1 a.m. on June 6, the pair allegedly stopped along a county road, pulled her from the car and climbed on top of her, planning to rape her, as Crosley choked Wolfe until she passed out, according to the affidavits.

Buskirk told officers he then handcuffed Wolfe behind her back while Crosley taped her legs and mouth with duct tape and struck her several times in the face after she tried to bite them. Crosley then put his own shirt over Wolfe’s face and put more tape over her head, the affidavit said.

Crosley then said “over and over that she needed to die,” prompting Buskirk to wrap a rope around her neck and choke her until she stopped struggling, according to the affidavit. They then placed Wolfe in the trunk, tied her up and drove to the lake, where they dragged her body to a ledge overlooking the lake and threw it into the water, according to the affidavit.
