Wolfe to sculpt statue of Col. H. Weir Cook

INDIANAPOLIS — Terre Haute artist Bill Wolfe has been commissioned to create a sculpture of Col. H. Weir Cook for display inside the Indianapolis International Airport terminal that bears his name.

The Weir Cook statue is expected to be completed by April 2015, according to an announcement this morning at the airport.

Wolfe was on hand for the announcement, during which an artist’s rendering of what the statue will look like was unveiled.

The project is part of the Military/Veterans Coalition of Indiana, which has raised $60,000 of the $80,000 needed for the project. Rolls-Royce is the key sponsor of the project.

Weir Cook, a native Hoosier, was a fighter pilot in World War I. After the war, he was a key figure in commercial aviation development in the United States. Weir Cook also served in the Indiana Air Guard, where he attained the rank of colonel. He died in 1943, in a plane crash while training pilots during the Second World War.
