‘Run for Fallen’ Aug. 18 at trail around Memorial Stadium

Participants encouraged to register on event website

TERRE HAUTE — What began as one woman’s tribute to her fallen friend has grown into something bigger than she could have imagined. Very soon, American flags will once again line the Indiana Mile trail around the Memorial Stadium at Brown and Wabash avenues. Each flag bears the name of a hero who has fallen in operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

This year, there will be nearly 6,500 flags flying Aug. 18 through 24. Citizens are encouraged to walk, run or bike to honor the fallen.

This year the Wabash Valley Run For the Fallen will kick off with a 5K race on Aug. 18 to benefit the Dale Griffin Memorial Fund and The Folds of Honor Foundation. It will begin at the Veterans Memorial flagpole at 20th Street and Ohio Boulevard and will end at the Veterans Memorial Park at Memorial Stadium.

Runners can register online at www.wvrunforthefallen.org. More information about the event also can be found at that site.

Olivia Goulding, the event’s founder and director, said she continues to be amazed by the impact this event has on the community. “One woman recently told me that her husband rarely, if ever, speaks of his service in Afghanistan or the friends he lost there. But he looks forward to Run For the Fallen each year. It is during this event that he can simply walk the trail and he allows those memories to come for a time.”

Goulding encourages all members of our community to participate. “Although the scars of war run deep for families that have lost loved ones and for those men and women who have returned without their friends, Wabash Valley Run For The Fallen serves to give honor to those who didn’t return and a time and place of remembrance for the rest of us.”
