VIDEO: Indiana State women looking to add to winning streak at home

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State looks to put a three-game winning streak together tonight against Loyola, who topped the Sycamores behind 30 points by senior forward Troy Hambric for one of the Ramblers’ nine wins this season.

The Sycamores’ women’s basketball team stifled Missouri State last Friday and knocked off first-place Wichita State on Sunday for a pair of road wins last weekend. They'll look to build upon that momentum tonight at home.

“We’re going against one of the best players in our league. She can score in a variety of ways. This kid’s dynamite. What she does around the basket, she’s really terrific,” ISU coach Teri Moren said. “We’ll have to defend better. We feel like we’re doing a pretty good job of that now. Got to do a lot better job with our transition defense. That’s a big part of their offense, being able to get run outs and early offense.”

Jasmine Grier is coming off a season-best 22 points, but she’s also an integral part of the Sycamores’ defensive schemes. It’s taken time for her to get accustomed to her responsibilities in the defense.

“I tend to struggle a little on the defensive end, but my teammates they give me the confidence. The coaches want to use my length,” Grier said. “They really emphasize that and that gives me the motivation, the determination to do good at the defensive end.

“Be very disruptive, that’s what coach [Joey] Wells always says. Like a junkyard dog.”

Senior Anna Munn’s return to the starting lineup last weekend coincided with the Sycamores’ return to playing more consistent basketball.

Munn also likes the dynamic of having another outside shooting threat with her in the backcourt.

“Day one, we knew Jasmine Grier was going to be something special. From this point forward, she’s going to have nothing but confidence,” Munn said.

It’s the last homestand for the Sycamores, who still have a shot at a Missouri Valley Conference title if the first-place Shockers falter.

“That was just a huge spark for us. Both wins. That gave us the confidence boost that we can make things happen. Going into our last game stretch, that’s going to bring us some positive vibes,” senior Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir said.
