Sheriff's deputies reporting several accidents due to 'black ice'

TERRE HAUTE — Vigo County Sheriff¹s deputies have responded to several crashes due to icy road conditions this morning.

An accident with injury is currently being worked on U.S. 41 at Cobblestone Crossings, reports Chief Deputy Clark Cottom.

While that accident is the only incident involving injury since the most recent ice-snow mixture fell on Monday afternoon, deputies have responded to several vehicle slide-offs and property damage incidents in the county.

"It doesn't look too bad, so people are going too fast," Cottom said of the road conditions.

County roads are mostly ice covered; Interstate 70 and U.S. 41 are covered with a glaze of transparent "black ice."

Bridges and overpasses are extremely slick and hazardous.

Motorists are encouraged to leave early and drive slow on their commute to work this morning.
