TERRE HAUTE —
The county and city are now unified in their smoking bans.
Just moments ago, Vigo County commissioners approved toughening the county ordinance to mirror the city’s. The vote was 3-0 in favor of the proposal.
Last year, the Terre Haute City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting smoking in virtually all enclosed workplaces. That ordinance is set to take effect July 1.
The county’s ordinance will extend the city’s rules to all of Vigo County, starting July 1. County rules supersede the city’s, so even if they wanted to, city officials could not repeal their current ordinance and pass something less restrictive.
The new rules will prohibit smoking even in private clubs, such as American Legion posts and VFW halls. Members of those groups were some of the strongest opponents of the county’s action.
