Gallery seeking children’s art entries by Feb. 10
Gaslight Art Colony in Marshall, Ill., will host a Children’s Art Show Feb. 15 through March 8.
All children in kindergarten through high school can enter, and prizes will be awarded.
Registration and waiver forms are available from local art teachers or from the gallery at 516 Archer Ave.

Art Spaces, Inc.-Wabash Valley Outdoor Sculpture Collection and Indiana State University Community School of the Arts encourage poets and aspiring poets to enter the 2014 Max Ehrmann Poetry Competition.
Great American Songbook concert Feb. 4 showcases singers, songwriters
In a celebration of great songwriters and singers, faculty and students of Indiana State University’s School of Music will bring to life a collection of well-loved standards during a free performance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the University Hall Theater.
ISU Chamber Winds to perform Feb. 6
The Indiana State University Regali Chamber Winds will perform a variety of works at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 6 in the Landini Center for Performing and Fine Arts Recital Hall.
Optimists plan Feb. 7 Italian Beef Dinner
The Clinton Breakfast Optimist Club will have an Italian Beef Dinner at South Vermillion High School cafeteria from 4 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 7. The club will serve an Italian beef sandwich, coleslaw, chips, dessert and drink. The cost for dinner will be $10 for an 8-ounce portion for adults, or $6 for a 4-ounce portion for children under 12.
Winter Choral Festival Feb. 7 to feature Cantus
Lincoln Trail College is scheduled to present Cantus as guest artist for its 2014 Winter Festival on Feb. 7.
Members of Cantus, a men’s vocal ensemble, performs without a conductor, and rehearse as chamber musicians, each contributing to the entirety of the artistic process.
VU to host Feb. 9 Old Post Bluegrass Jam
Vincennes University’s Beckes Student Union will come alive with the sound of fiddles, banjoes, mandolins, guitars and more during the 14th annual Old Post Bluegrass Jam from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 9. Admission is free.
ISU, Arts Illiana present photo competition on aging through Feb. 13
Indiana State University and Arts Illiana are seeking entries for an “Aging in the Wabash Valley” photo competition, designed to encourage the community to think about aging in a new way.
Contestants should submit images around the theme of aging in the Wabash Valley. Winning entries will be framed for display in the Arena Building on the ISU campus and at other local venues upon request.
Burroughs paintings on display through Feb. 5
The Grunwald Gallery of Art in Bloomington is exhibiting “William S. Burroughs: Paintings” through Wednesday.
Burroughs is an American author, essayist, painter and spoken-word performer. He wrote 18 novels and six short story collections.

“Kindness” exhibition deadline extended
Arts Illiana has extended the deadline for artists to submit entries in its "What Does Kindness Look Like?" exhibition.
Images and Words at the Swope Art Museum Feb. 7 to March 22
During 2014, the Swope Art Museum will focus on the relationship between art and literature, beginning with three exhibitions that open on Feb. 7. “Craig McDaniel: The Story of E and Other Love Letters” and “Inward Eye: Richard Anuszkiewicz and William Blake,” will be on view from Feb. 7 to March 8 in the Haslem and Hodge Galleries and Gallery Three, while “From the Swope’s Collection: Selected Art Inspired by Literature,” will be on view from Feb. 7 to March 22 in the Education Gallery. The exhibitions are made possible by the Alliance of the Swope.
Community Theatre to present Steve Martin comedy through Feb. 2
Community Theatre of Terre Haute warms up the cold winter season with a Steve Martin comedy, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile.” It opens this Friday and continues through the weekend. Additional performances are Jan. 31 through Feb. 2.
Sisters of Providence accepting entries to Youth Art Contest through March 5
Wabash Valley artists ages 5-18 are invited to enter their creative, artistic masterpiece in the Sisters of Providence’s eighth annual Youth Art Contest. Submissions are now being accepted, through 4 p.m. March 5 at Owens Hall Reception at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Cheerleading event to be broadcast April 10 at Showplace 12

The Indy South Train Show will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Southside Knights of Columbus, 511 E. Thompson Road, Indianapolis.
Cloud Library gives access to e-books
The Marshall (Ill.) Public Library is among libraries in Illinois who are benefitting from a two-year grant project from the Illinois State Library to expand patron access to e-books.
The grant project provides library cardholders with free access to the 3M Cloud Library, a user-friendly app and lending system.
Max the tiger benefit in Hutsonville Feb. 7
Hutsonville (Ill.) High School will host the seventh annual Max Benefit from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 7 in the Commons. The meal will consist of spaghetti with meat sauce and will be catered by Fazoli’s of Vincennes. Tickets are $7, and proceeds go to the Exotic Feline Rescue Center.
Auditions set for ‘God of Carnage’ Jan. 27-28
Community Theatre of Terre Haute will stage auditions for “God of Carnage,” a drama by Yasmina Reza, at 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. There are roles for two men and two women. Sharon Russell is the director. Performance dates are March 14-16 and 21-23, with rehearsals beginning shortly after auditions.
Concert Jan. 29 to feature ISU Wind Orchestra
Vincennes University will present a guest concert featuring the Indiana State University Wind Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 29 at the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center.
Admission is free. The Skelton Center is on the Vincennes University campus at 20 Red Skelton Blvd.
American Chili Cook Off planned for Feb. 22
The Montezuma Park Board has scheduled its inaugural American Chili Cook Off for 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Montezuma Community Center.
Exhibit of Ansel Adams photos coming March 1 to Eiteljorg in Indianapolis
An exhibit of some of famed landscape photographer Ansel Adams’ favorite photos is coming to a downtown Indianapolis museum.
The collection of more than 80 photos Adams personally selected from his catalogue opens March 1 at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art museum.
Rockville Rotary to host Jan. 25 ‘Striking Out Polio’ bowling fundraiser
The Rockville Rotary Club is planning a “Striking Out Polio” bowling event from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Thirty-Six Saloon banquet room in Rockville.
The Club is participating locally in Rotary’s international effort to eradicate the crippling disease worldwide by pledging to raise $1,000 to contribute toward the $355-million challenge grant from the Gates Foundation.
Masterworks Chorale searching for vocalists
Indiana State University’s Masterworks Chorale, a community choir that serves the Wabash Valley, is looking for vocalists who love choral music and are interested in performing.
The 70- to 75-voice ensemble, which performs major choral works each semester, comprises Indiana State students, faculty and staff, and community members.
Register child for free books
All children 5 and younger who live in the Marshall, Ill., school district can receive free books through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, thanks to funding by Gerald and Jean Forsythe.
