Butler Libraries will present “I Lay My Stitches Down: An Evening with Children’s Book Illustrator Michele Wood” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7, in Irwin Library at Butler University in Indianapolis.
Wood, a children’s book author and illustrator based in Indianapolis, will discuss and sign copies of her most recent work, “I Lay My Stitches Down: Poems of American Slavery.” Written by Cynthia Grady, the book uses the American folk tradition of quilting as a structural framework. Wood employs African and American textile patterns and folk art motifs in her illustrations to complement the poetry.
The book has been selected for the New York Public Library’s “Children’s Books 2012: 100 Books for Reading and Sharing” list.
Wood received the American Book Award for “Going Back Home” and the American Library Association’s Coretta Scott King Award for her 1999 work “I See the Rhythm.” Visit www.michelewood.com.
