Center offers felting, spinning workshops Nov. 9

White Violet Center for Eco-Justice at St. Mary-of-the-Woods is offering three fiber workshops in November, just in time for holiday crafting.

A Beginning Felting workshop is scheduled 1 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 9. Designed for those with no prior experience, the class will offer an introduction to both water felting and needle felting with an opportunity to create a project using each technique.

Sister Maureen Freeman, CSJ, director of White Violet Center, will lead the class. Cost is $50 and registration by Friday is preferred.

Award-winning fiber artist Robin Edmundson will lead Spinning 102 on Nov. 16. This class is designed for those with basic spinning skills who wish to move their work to the next level and for those with more spinning experience who want to try out new techniques and learn from others. Participants will receive a grab bag of different fibers to try out, and spinning wheels will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring their own wheels or fiber if they wish.

The class is from 9 to 5 p.m. Cost is $100 per person with lunch and refreshments included. Registration by Nov. 8 is preferred.

Participants can delve more deeply into Water Felting from 1 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 23. No prior experience in felting is needed. Sister Maureen Freeman will again be leading the class as participants create a felt hat, some felted soap and maybe even a vase. Cost for the workshop is $50 and registration prior to Nov. 15 is preferred.

Candace Minster, fiber arts coordinator for White Violet Center, said she has heard positive feedback from these workshops in the past.

She says that felting, one of the oldest crafts, is for anyone. “Felting is very easy, especially needle felting. Kids can do it in no time. People who say ‘I have no craft skills’ can felt. It’s very, very simple. It’s good for people who don’t have a lot of dexterity in their fingers, perhaps due to arthritis. People who find it hard to knit or do other needlework can still come and felt,” Minster said.

Minster says the spinning workshop provides a great opportunity to share tips and ideas with others. She says it is also nice to have a chance to try different types of fiber, from cotton to alpaca to various types of sheep wool to see how they spin up. “And it’s nice to do it with Robin right there. She’s a really gifted teacher and is wonderfully supportive,” Minster said.

“It’s always fun to see the finished products people do. We’ll have a show-and-tell at the end,” she said. “Even though everyone is using the same technique, each person’s project ends up very different, allowing personality to shine through.”
