‘Blessing of the Animals’ at church Oct. 6

Wagging tails, barks and meows — a variety of furry, feathered, finny, scaly and stuffed creatures — is what you’ll find at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church Sunday afternoon.

Beginning at 4, the critters and their human companions will gather in the Mabley Garden to celebrate the “Blessing of the Animals.”

Originally intended to honor St. Francis of Assisi, known for his connection with animals, the Blessing is celebrated worldwide. Its purpose is to recognize the important relationship between all living things and especially the powerful bond between people and their pets. The service is ecumenical, and all are invited to bring an animal and enjoy participating.

For animals who don’t travel well, a photo or stuffed stand-in is fine. Critter-less humans are welcome as well. (This is a great event for “fur-deprived” college students who miss their pets at home.)

Snacks will be provided, and a freewill offering will benefit the Terre Haute Humane Society. For safety’s sake, non-human living things should be properly vaccinated and leashed, crated or otherwise restrained.

St. Stephen’s is located at 215 N. Seventh St. The garden is easily visible from the street.
