Community Theatre of Clay County plans auditions, dessert theater performances

Community Theatre of Clay County Inc. announces its upcoming auditions for the theatrical performance of “The Miracle Worker.” This classic tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her student, blind and mute Helen Keller. “The Miracle Worker” dramatizes the volatile relationship between the lonely teacher and her charge. Trapped in a secret, silent world, unable to communicate, Helen remains captive until Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence.  This is a story of triumph and spirit.

Auditions are at 2 p.m. on Sunday and will be staged at The Lark Theater, 8 E. National Ave., Brazil.  Actors are needed to fill seven male and seven female roles and include all ages. Lead roles include Annie Sullivan, teacher; Helen, a blind and deaf student; Helen’s parents; fellow students and adults in the young child's life. All are welcome to attend and participate in the upcoming performances.

Community Theatre of Clay County and its performers are practicing for the September performances of “Short Scenes/Long Laughs.” The performances will be on Sept. 13 and 14, and will include a dessert bar. The evening involves a series of short skits and monologues written for an ensemble of talented actors.

Several of the skits being performed originally aired on “The Carol Burnett Show.” Each scene grapples with a diverse problem or experience common to each of us. The scenes range in topics from class reunions, chance encounters, aging gracefully to Neil Armstrong and the lunar landing.

Actors will take on diverse roles in a fast-paced evening. The results are encounters delivered with amusing revelations, surprising insights and thought-provoking hilarity.

The show will be a dessert theater beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the play beginning at about 7:15. Tickets are $15 per person and are available by contacting Lisa at 812-442-6909. Reservations must be made in advance of the performance dates.
