Sinfonietta to begin fall rehearsals

TERRE HAUTE — Rehearsals will begin next week for the Sinfonietta Pops Orchestra’s fall concert season.

Music director James N. Chesterson said he hopes to recruit additional musicians, especially oboe and bassoon performers at the rehearsals, which are scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday in Cecilian Auditorium at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. The orchestra also has several positions open in the string section for violin, viola, cello and string bass.

The orchestra’s first concert of the season is scheduled for 3 p.m. Oct. 20 in Cecilian Auditorium.

Musicians are not required to audition for the orchestra but are expected to have a minimum of high school level competency. All rehearsals are conducted from 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays in Cecilian Auditorium.

The Oct. 20 concert, “Some Things Are Made to Last,” will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the completion of the Conservatory of Music Building and the Anne-Therese Guerin Hall on the SMWC campus.

According to a news release: “The Sinfonietta Pops Orchestra is privileged to perform in the 724-seat Cecilian Auditorium located in the center of the Conservatory. The Auditorium is patterned after the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany, founded by Felix Mendelssohn in 1843. The cantilevered balcony projects 30 feet from the rear wall for an unobstructed view of the stage. The auditorium with its leaded-glass dome replicates the European acoustical egg theory, providing near-perfect acoustics.”

Chesterson said all music selected for this concert will share one commonality —  they were all written during the time period of the historical buildings’ construction.

The second concert of the fall/winter season is scheduled for 3 p.m. Nov. 23, also in Cecilian Auditorium. That concert is intended to get the audience into a Christmas frame of mind and will include traditional holiday music.

Admission to the Sinfonietta concerts is $10 for adults, $5 for students and children.
