Music, wheels, food, games to highlight Block Party

Music, wheels, food, arts and crafts, games and high-flying fun highlight the third annual Downtown Terre Haute Block Party on Saturday, from 1 p.m. to midnight. The Block Party spans Wabash Avenue from Fourth to Ninth streets and features five stages of live entertainment. Event admission and stage entertainment are free.

The event is designed to bring the community together in a party atmosphere and to welcome students and newcomers to the city.

“Events like the Downtown Terre Haute Block Party allows us to come together and celebrate who we are, what we have done, and where we are going as a community,” said Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett.

New this year is the Hauteans in Motion Zip Line by A-1 For Fun and sponsored by UAP Clinic. The line is three stories high and 100 feet long at Fifth Street and Wabash Avenue. Cost is $5 per person, and it will run from 1 to 8 p.m. Riders must be at least 50 pounds and no more than 250 pounds.

“I can’t wait to see the Zipline in action,” said Brian Dyer, president, Downtown Terre Haute Inc. “I look forward to a great day and an even larger crowd than last year!”

Musical entertainment includes The Beachbums, Brad Anderson & Fanfare, Crowe Committee, Cry on High, Dicky James & the Blue Flames, Erin Wilson, The Lemon Brothers Band, Mean Street, Mullet Over, Papa J. Otis, and Swag.

Other featured programs include Academy of Dance performing “A Little Princess,” a Millie & Maude Fashion Show, New Wave Pro Wrestling, Pulse Fitness with Heather Michael, Swinging Mates Square Dancers, and the Third Thursday Poetry Asylum. Returning to the Block Party are the popular Artisan Market and Children’s Zone.

Also, party-goers can show off their cornhole skills at the cornhole tournament. The free tournament takes place at 6:30 p.m. on Wabash Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets. Teams of two will square off for tournament play with registration and check-in at 5:30. Tournament will be played bracket style.

All ages are welcome and prizes will be awarded with the winning team receiving a Downtown Terre Haute prize package. Register in advance at tinyurl.com/o69r8oe. For more information, contact Katie Shane at Katie.shane@bgibson.com.

Car enthusiasts will enjoy the Vintage Wheels from the Don Smith/First Financial Collection from noon to 4 p.m. Motorcycles also will be on display.

“I appreciate all the efforts of our volunteers and those folks who make our Block Party such a hit! We have so many things for everyone in the family and returning college students as well,” Dyer said.

The event is presented by Downtown Terre Haute Inc. The presenting sponsor is Union Hospital. The schedule is subject to change.

No pets or coolers will be allowed. For more details, “Like” the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/dthblockparty.
