Step back in time this weekend at Fowler Park Pioneer Days

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County Park and Recreation Department will be celebrating its 40th annual Fowler Park Pioneer Days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The public is invited to step back in time and enjoy a simpler way of life.

Pioneer Village, located within Fowler Park, features log cabins, a log barn, smokehouse, blacksmith shop, a covered bridge and a gristmill.

Approximately 150 Pioneer Village Folk and volunteers will recreate the 1840s by demonstrating the same routine tasks and activities of our ancestors, using the same methods and tools. Hands-on activities will be scattered throughout Pioneer Village to encourage visitor participation. Questions are always welcome; the weekend is designed as a learning experience.

Old-fashioned crafters, located on the south side of the village, demonstrate their talents, and their crafts will be available for purchase. This year’s crafts will include hand-woven rugs, jewelry, wooden toys, clothing, baskets, furniture and more. Food vendors, featuring some homemade classics, will be located on the south side of the covered bridge by the shelter. Drinks, meals and desserts will be available for purchase. The Traders Market, located in the field behind the shelter, will have a variety of hand-crafted items and locally grown orchard and farm products available for purchase. Local artists can be seen throughout Pioneer Village drawing, painting and selling their artwork.

Parking is $2 for each full day. Fowler Park is south of Terre Haute and east of U.S. 41. Directional signage is on U.S. 41.
