Cultivating Creativity showcases student artists

Students represented in the 2013-14 Cultivating Creativity: Consolidated Communications Children’s Art Exhibition were recognized for their achievement at an April 13 awards reception in the Tarble Arts Center on Eastern Illinois University’s campus.

Each student represented in the exhibition received a $50 check, provided by Consolidated Communications. In addition, each of the participating schools received a $50 donation from Consolidated Communications in support of their schools’ art programs.

The exhibition consists of 47 area elementary, middle and senior high school students. The tour began at the Helen Matthes Library in Effingham on Oct. 19 and has been traveling to 12 different locations throughout east-central Illinois. The exhibit’s yearlong tour will conclude in August at Charleston Carnegie Public Library.

The purpose of Cultivating Creativity is to showcase some of the outstanding art created by area students, to highlight the excellent work being done by area school art teachers, and to emphasize the importance of including the arts in a well-rounded school curriculum.

Area students among those to be recognized include: Brandon Brinkley, Chrisman High School; Samantha Harper, Chrisman Grade School; Logan Hawker, Casey-Westfield Junior High School; Michael Jones, Kansas School; Chenoa Sowers, Casey-Westfield High School; and Drew Walker, Crestwood School.

The artworks comprise a wide variety of media and styles. Included are paintings in watercolor, oil, tempera and acrylic and drawings in ink, colored pencil, graphite, crayon, marker, oil pastels and charcoal. Other media represented are scratchboard, collages, textiles, digital photography, prints, graphic design, tissue, cast plaster and mixed media.

Cultivating Creativity is a community engagement program of the Tarble Arts Center. The Tarble also offers a variety of educational programs for area schools.
