Paris Shakespeareans to stage ‘The Tempest’ on May 18

PARIS, ILL. — Shakespeare in the Park is scheduled to return to Twin Lakes Park in Paris, Ill., with a free performance of The Bard’s “The Tempest” on May 18.

Using an underscore of sea chanteys, Stone Soup Shakespeare will portray a motley crew of shipwrecked characters lost on an island. The performance begins at 6 p.m. CDT.

Alasdair Hunter will join Stone Soup Shakespeare from Glasgow, Scotland, to direct the production. Hunter has directed throughout the United Kingdom and has also worked in New York City with The Flea Theater.

“The Tempest has long been my favorite play of Shakespeare’s — I’m beyond thrilled to be collaborating again with Alasdair Hunter on this project,” said Julia Stemper, artistic director for Stone Soup Shakespeare.

Stemper and Hunter first collaborated on Shakespeare while working on “Twelfth Night” at London’s Globe Theater.

“While working at The Globe we learned just how fluid the relationship is between audience and stage – it really is about bringing the audience into the world of the play – which is what we aim to do; tell a story, give our audiences an adventure that we share with them and they share with each other”

In keeping with the spirit of the children’s story, “Stone Soup,” from which the company takes its name, audience members are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to be donated to the local Compassionate Food Ministry.

“Bringing Shakespeare to Life,” a free actors workshop, is scheduled for 2 p.m. on May 18 at Paris Public Library, 207 S. Main St. The 90-minute workshop is designed to give participants a deeper understanding of Shakespeare, “The Tempest” and acting in general. The workshop is open to adults, middle schoolers and high school students.

The 2013 Stone Soup Shakespeare tour is partially supported by the Carbondale Community Arts Southern Arts Fund and by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. The local performance is presented by Paris Public Library, Paris Park Board and Friends of the Paris Library.
