Symphony performance Nov. 2 to feature ‘Trumpet Concerto’

Rob Waugh, principal trumpet of the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, will perform the famous “Hummel Trumpet Concerto” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Tilson Auditorium.

The program will include Brahms’ powerful “4th Symphony,” “Yerakina” by Karidoyanes, and Frederick Delius’ “Walk to the Paradise Garden” from “A Village Romeo and Juliet.”

Hummel’s trumpet concerto is one of the most lively and appealing pieces written for trumpet and orchestra. Waugh, Indiana State University professor of trumpet, is now in his fifth season as principal trumpet of the symphony and has become an audience favorite.

Following last season’s performance of “Café Neon” by Steven Karidoyanes, music director David Bowden had so many requests for more music from this composer that he immediately scheduled “Yerakina,” another musical explosion of Greek song and dance. Brahms’ “Symphony No. 4” is an acknowledged masterpiece and the last orchestral work of this composer.

Before the concert, audience members can attend Concert Conversations with Bowden in the Heritage Ballroom. The free talk begins at 6:45 and will include a discussion with Waugh about what’s interesting and unique about the music of the evening.

A free “Family Time” concert for children of all ages will be presented from 2 to 2:30 p.m. during the Saturday dress rehearsal in Tilson Auditorium.

No tickets or reservations are required for this event, which offers children the opportunity to experience a live symphonic performance in a family-friendly environment.

Concert tickets can be purchased at www.hulmancenter.org, www.ticketmaster.com or 800-745-3000. Prices begin at $5 for preschool through college youth/students and $20 for adults.

Discounted group rates are available for groups of 10 or more and also by calling the Hulman Center ticket office at 812-237-3737.

The Tilson Auditorium accessible drop-off location is at Seventh Street and Larry Bird Avenue. Accessible seats are sold with one free companion seat and are available through the Hulman Center ticket office.
