Nature primary inspiration for Art Guild’s artist of the month

The Wabash Valley Art Guild has named Deborah Hickman as the artist of the month, showcasing her work at the Vigo County Public Library. Hickman is an active participant in the region’s art scene and is a member of the Swope Art Museum.

Designing and creating have been a part of Hickman’s personality as long as she can remember. As early as her junior high school years, she remembers her desire to become an art teacher. She pursued art training throughout high school, and went on to receive bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art education at Indiana State University.

Hickman served the Vigo Country School Corp. as an art teacher for the next 30 years.

Nature is the primary inspiration for much of Hickman’s work. The lines, textures and forms of natural objects fascinate her, and she expresses this through her art.

A wet snowfall last winter led to the watercolor painting “Winter White,” which depicts delicate snow clinging to the trees as the branches cascade downward because of the weight of the snow.

Another work on display is “Plumeria,” a painting of a tropical flowering plant that is very dear to Hickman. Every summer she places the plant outside in the sun where it produces a fragrant flower. During the cold season, she takes tender care of the plant inside her home.

In addition to working with pastels, watercolors and charcoal, Hickman creates three-dimensional pieces such as jewelry, bowls and baskets, infusing natural materials for an earthy embellishment.

Hickman also is a member of the Vigo County and Indiana Retired Teachers associations, as well as the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. She may be contacted through the Wabash Valley Art Guild at 812-394-2353.
