Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Fest offers inspiration for holy living Oct. 19

The Sisters of Providence will host a celebration of the life and legacy of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 19 at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. The price will be $15 per person and include lunch.

The Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Fest will allow participants to learn from the example of holiness and faith modeled by Guerin, the eighth person in the United States to be named a saint in the Roman Catholic church.

Festivities will begin in O’Shaughnessy Hall in Providence Center. From there, participants will embark on a pilgrimage around the grounds to sacred places in the life of Guerin. Reflections, readings and songs will help highlight the significance of each location.

Those not able physically to journey to these locations can participate in a similar reflective journey in the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

A festive lunch will follow the morning pilgrimage.

After lunch, participants can choose to join in one or more of 10 activities, including sessions on Guerin and humor, on art and journaling, and on the healing stories.

Participants can also choose to pray at the labyrinth or in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, view a documentary on the life of Guerin or see plans for the new shrine to be created in her honor.

Other options are nature walks or visiting the alpacas.

The day will conclude with a Mass celebrating Guerin’s legacy at 3 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

“I’m excited to share with people about plans for the new shrine and to really honor Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and to share about her impact on people’s lives today. It’s not about the past. It’s about the past, the present and the future,” said Sister Jan Craven, director of shrines and tours at St. Mary-of-the-Woods and the event’s coordinator.

Craven said the day is open to those of all faith traditions, with any or no knowledge of Guerin.

“It’s to help people deepen their own faith life and spiritual journey by reflecting on her journey,” Craven said. “I hope people take away the wow factor of a phenomenal day of interacting with people whose lives have been changed and touched by this woman. I hope people leave feeling much better about their own journey.”
