Nationally acclaimed Seattle-based artist to give presentation at Swope

Buster Simpson to speak on art and the environment

TERRE HAUTE — The Swope Art Museum and Art Spaces Inc. will present a talk by nationally acclaimed Seattle-based artist Buster Simpson at noon on Wednesday at the Swope Art Museum, at 25 S. Seventh St.

The public is invited to join the artist to learn about art that interacts with the environment, as well as social and sustainability issues that can affect people’s lives. Visitors are welcome to bring a lunch to eat during the free presentation.

Simpson is known for works that address ecological and social issues, and he was an early pioneer in the field of urban environmentalism and art in public spaces.

His vision and works are unique to the surroundings of sites where he locates his projects, but they encompass a global perspective.

Examples of his works include moving stormwater through lively and aesthetically dynamic forms to clean it before it ends up in a river or bay, de-acidifying a river through tossing in limestone tablets shaped like antacids and transforming former ship hulls to resemble plows.

This event is presented as part of the “Turn to the River” project. Visit www.wabashvalleyartspaces.com or call 812-235-2801 for more information. For more information about the event, go to www.swope.org or 812-238-1676.
