Shawnee Summer Theatre opens season with ‘The Taffetas’

News Release

---- — Shawnee Summer Theatre of Greene County will begin its 54th season with “The Taffetas,” a musical journey through the “fabulous ’50s.” This nostalgic musical features some of the biggest hits of the era, such as “Mr. Sandman,” “Lollipop” and “Sh-Boom.”

It’s the 1950s, and four singing sisters from Muncie — Kaye, Peggy, Cheryl and Donna — are making their national television singing debut. “Spotlight on Music,” a fictitious weekly 1950s television show on the real-life Dumont Television Network, sets the framework for an evening of some of the greatest hits of the 1950s. A tribute to the girl groups of the 1950s, The Taffetas pay tribute to the sounds of The McGuire Sisters, The Fontane Sisters, The Chordettes and other ’50s favorites.

Opening Off-Broadway almost two years before “Forever Plaid,” The Taffetas are a nostalgia trip, reminding the audience what Sunday night television was like on a 12-inch black-and-white TV screen.

The cast features veteran Shawnee Theatre actress Heather Lawler as Kaye (also serving as choreographer), as well as Shawnee Theatre newcomers Melissa Griffith as Cheryl, Emily Lyons as Donna and Kayleigh Greenwood as Peggy. “The Taffetas” is directed by Gene Salgado, Shawnee Theatre’s Costume Shop manager and costume designer for the past three seasons.

“‘The Taffetas’ transports you to the time of putting a dime in the jukebox, sipping on a chocolate malt and watching black-and-white television,” Salgado sayd. “The four Taffetas in our cast have beautiful voices that blend together smoothly, just like the girl groups of yesteryear. With so many classic hits, this show promises to leave you humming all the way home.”

“This show is truly nostalgic for anyone familiar with the music of the ’50s,” said Kevin Lee Guthridge, producing artistic director. “I remember hearing many of these songs when my mother would play her old records while I was growing up. We have an incredible cast for this show and I have no doubt that our audiences will be swaying and singing along to all of the hits from the era.”

“The Taffetas” runs June 13-16 and June 20–23, with Thursday through Saturday performances at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets for this musical are $16 for adults and $8 for children. A six-punch flex pass is available for $65 and can be used for any 2013 Shawnee Theatre performance or event.
