MARSHALL, ILL. — Gaslight Art Colony will present the artwork of Mary Jo Maraldo at the gallery at 516 Archer Ave. in Marshall, Ill., Saturday through June 8. An artist’s reception will be from 6 to 9 p.m. CDT Saturday at the gallery.

Born and raised in Terre Haute, Maraldo lived in Japan for eight years. She began her studies of Japanese language and culture in 1971 at Sophia University, Tokyo, and in 1972 began formal lessons in Ikebana, Ikenobo School. In 1984 she received teaching credentials in Ikenobo. She did numerous gallery installations of large sculptural Ikebana works at the Jacksonville Art Museum from 1982 to 1986. Her formal study of Japanese calligraphy began in 1987 under Daiki Takemoto in Kyoto, where some of her work was shown in 1988. In addition to exhibiting in many group shows, she has had solo shows of calligraphic works, both two- and three-dimensional, at museums and galleries in Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and Sarasota, Fla., Santa Fe, N.M., and Terre Haute.
