Butler Ballet opens spring season with Midwinter Dance Festival

INDIANAPOLIS — Butler Ballet celebrates the 100th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” with Paul Taylor’s dance version, “Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rehearsal),” as part of the annual Midwinter Dance Festival at 8 p.m. Feb. 15-16 in Clowes Memorial Hall.

Taylor’s black comedy about a ballet company in rehearsal, a stolen baby, and a detective, is staged by Associate Professor of Dance Susan McGuire. “(The Rehearsal)” will also be seen as part of the Butler ArtsFest in April, celebrating the opening of the Howard L. Schrott Center for the Arts.

Midwinter Dance Festival will also feature original works by Butler dance faculty Marek Cholewa, Stephan Laurent, Cynthia Pratt, Derek Reid, and guest faculty Michael J. Johnson.

The season continues at 7:30 p.m. March 7-8 with the Senior Dance Production in Lilly Hall Room 310.

The free event will feature original choreographic works by graduating seniors. No tickets are required. For program information, call 317-940-9346.

The season concludes at 8 p.m. April 19-21 with “Giselle” in Clowes Memorial Hall.

“Giselle ou Les Wilis,” which premiered in 1841, is the essence of the Romantic ballet. “Giselle” is the story of a simple peasant girl who is betrayed by love, driven to madness, dies of a broken heart, becomes a ghostly spirit, and eventually saves the life of the man who betrayed her.

The score of brilliant ballet composer Adolphe Adam — with its beautiful melodies, vibrant peasant dances, dramatic “mad scene,” and ghostly world of the supernatural Wilis — will be performed by the Butler Ballet Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Richard Auldon Clark. Embrace your true romantic side and join the Butler Ballet in their presentation of “Giselle.”

This performance is part of the Butler ArtsFest running April 18-28 on the campus of Butler University celebrating the opening of the Howard L. Schrott Center for the Arts.

Tickets for “(The Rehearsal)” and “Giselle” are $21.50 to $28.50 for adults; $17 to $23 for seniors 62 and up, children under 18 and students with ID; $14 to $20 for groups of 15 or more. They are available at the box office, 317-940-6444, or charge by phone at 800-982-2787.
