Female sailor to tell of Cold War service

News Release

TERRE HAUTE — Kathy Swearingen Wolf is the author of a memoir called “Letters from Toledo: Adventures of a Female Sailor During the Cold War” that chronicles her four-year enlistment in the United States Navy from 1977-1981.

The author will give a book talk followed by a signing at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 26 at the Marshall Public Library. Books will be available for sale.

Wolf entered the Navy when she was 18 years old and became a hunter of submarines during the Cold War. In her story of that time, she includes many of the letters sent to her from friends and family in her hometown of Toledo, Ill. Not only do the letters help to tell Wolf’s story, they also convey the strong sense of community of the small rural town where she grew up. For her, it was a time of trials and tribulations but also great adventure. Wolf currently lives in Indiana with her husband.
