Marshall Band plans first summer concert Friday

The Marshall Municipal Band will kick off its 138th concert season at 8 p.m. CDT Friday on the Clark County Courthouse lawn in Marshall, Ill.

The city band with more than 50 musicians from across the Wabash Valley will be under the direction of Ralph Stewart.

The first concert will be in memory of past director, Harold Ellshoff, who was a director of the band for 45 years and a member for 67 years. Ellshoff died in April and the songs being played Friday evening are many of his favorites.

The Marshall Band is one of the oldest bands in Illinois. It began in 1875 and has been in continuous existence for 138 years. The band has served as an icon for the city of Marshall and surrounding areas. Its members range in age from freshmen in high school through adults.

Concerts are free and will be each Friday evening through Aug. 9. Ice cream socials are planned in conjunction with many of the band concerts. The Lions Club will be present in the antique popcorn wagon, too. Lawn chairs are encouraged.
