Indiana State purchases ‘Somewhere in Tea-Time’

TERRE HAUTE — “Somewhere in Tea-Time,” a 32- by 28-inch framed photo by Indiana artist Tom Farris, has been purchased for the Permanent Collection of the Indiana State University Art Museum.

The piece is now on display at the 69th Annual Wabash Valley Juried Exhibition at the Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute. The exhibition runs through Aug. 24.

Farris received notification this week that his work received the ISU Museum of Art Permanent Collection Purchase Award for the piece to be included in the ISU Art Museum’s collection.

The subject of the award-winning photo is a costumed group of seven ladies enjoying tea while being seated in a lounge area of the Grand Hotel at Mackinac Island, Mich. The ladies are dressed in authentic early 1900s apparel.

This is one in a series of art photos Farris captured during the hotel’s “Somewhere in Time” weekend — celebrating the movie of the same name. The photo was also judged “Best People” photograph in the 2013 statewide In-Focus juried exhibition of photography in Anderson.

Farris, a resident of Muncie, is an Indiana-based artist, photographer, sculptor and writer — also known for his professional creative and idea services. A native of Wabash, he is a graduate of Ball State University.
