ISU Wind Orchestra to perform

TERRE HAUTE — Roby George, Indiana State University School of Music’s director of bands, will conduct a concert titled “Celestial Light” with the Wind Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 in Tilson Auditorium.

The program is highlighted by a performance of “Gavorkna Fanfare” by Jack Stamp, full of brilliant orchestration and percussion color, followed by a solemn and serene work written in 1964 and dedicated to JFK after the assassination, “The Leaves are Falling.”

“The final two works on the program are exciting and dynamic and represent this notion of celestial light, color and brilliance,” George said.

“Kingfishers Catch Fire” is a work that represents the bird in its full and colorful appearance; one of the more celestial and brilliant bird species on the planet. The final piece to be performed is Frank Ticheli’s “Symphony #2,” a composition with direct references to celestial light, shooting stars, the moon and the sun.

“In this work, the listener hears every possible suggestion of light, color and sparkling effects,” George added.

Admission to the event is free and attendance by campus and community members is encouraged. For more information, contact the School of Music at 812-237-2771.
