World’s oldest flying DC-3, Flagship Detroit, to visit TH

TERRE HAUTE — Wabash Valley residents can witness a rare sight as the Flagship Detroit Foundation has brought the original 1937 Flagship Detroit — the oldest flying example of this aircraft in the world — to Terre Haute for a visit.

The aircraft will be on display today on the ramp at Terre Haute International Airport-Hulman Field for aircraft tours and membership opportunities, including rides for foundation members.

The Douglas DC-3, first flown in 1935, began active service in 1936 and is perhaps best known as the first airplane that allowed airlines to base their profits on passenger service rather than U.S. Mail contracts.

It was designed as a replacement for the older DC-2 and Boeing 247, with longer range and greater passenger capacity.

The DC-3 was also produced in a Sleeper version with 14 seats and Pullman bunks.

The mission of the Foundation is to honor the men and women who built, maintained and flew these early commercial aircraft during the dawn of passenger aviation.

The foundation believes that its mission is best accomplished by maintaining the Flagship Detroit in flying condition and by taking Detroit to the people and allowing them to experience the sight and sound of this aircraft in flight.
