Terre Haute North Vigo High School students will present an original black box-style theater production of “Speak Now” at 6:30 p.m. on May 9 at the school’s auditorium.
“Speak Now,” a play written by senior Kasy Long, begins with a classic setting of a simple wedding. The bride walks down the aisle and greets her eager groom. However, when the preacher comes to the classic wedding line, “Speak now or forever hold your peace,” an unexpected visitor interrupts the festivities with a shocking announcement.
The visitor is the innocent Samantha Loveless, being played by Long. She is best friends with the bride, Kate Shaws (senior Emily Ferrell), and their friendship is tested throughout the course of the story as tensions rise on stage.
“I always envisioned a story with someone interrupting a wedding and causing a huge scene,” Long said. “I am really looking forward to seeing how the audience reacts to an original idea that’s put on stage in front of a live audience.”
Supporting cast members include AJ Contramaestre as Greg Williams, Jared Wells as Ben Adams, Dario Stephens as Jacob Shaws, Nicole Heath as Dr. Walker and Denise Loveless and Austin Faulds as Mr. Peterson.
The show is free and open to the public.
According to Wikipedia, black box theater “consists of a simple, somewhat unadorned performance space, usually a large square room with black walls and a flat floor. It is a relatively recent innovation in theatre.”
