Register now for adult Poetry and African Drumming classes at ISU

Indiana State University’s Community School of the Arts is introducing two exciting new classes for adults this fall: Poetry and African Drumming for beginning to intermediate level students. Classes start the week of Sept. 9 and there is still time to register.

The creative writing class is designed to aid in the understanding, enjoyment, and production of poetry. Participants will read and critique the works of established poets, as well as write and discuss their own poetic work in a casual, no-pressure workshop setting. The 10-week course will provide information on potential avenues for publication, as well as encourage entries into the local Max Ehrmann Poetry Contest. The class will culminate with the opportunity for each participant to share his or her work aloud at a public reading. “Poetry Repair Manual,” by Ted Kooser, is the required text and is included in the fee. Classes are conducted for 10 weeks on Tuesdays, 6 to 7:30 p.m. and is taught by Jack Bonham of the ISU English Department.

African drumming will teach students how to play three-four song styles from West Africa on a variety of African drums and hand-held percussion instruments. Conceived as a fun and low-pressure class, sessions will focus on group drumming, rhythmic organization, playing techniques, and musical expression. Designed for a range of abilities, previous experience with percussion or music reading is welcome but not required nor necessary. Music is taught within an oral tradition that utilizes direct demonstration and visual/aural cues, calling upon the student to merely listen, imitate, and gradually progress, eventually learning to attune with the group. Musical selections represent a rich caldron of African cultural traditions where people use drum ensembles for ceremonial activities, civic occasions, and recreational/social events. Instruments are provided. Classes are conducted for 12 weeks on Mondays, 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The fee for each class is $150/non-members and $135 for members. Fee includes all materials. For details, or to enroll, call the Community School of the Arts at 812-237-2575 or 812-237-2528 or visit www.unboundedpossibilities.com/csa.
