Co-existing subject of Aug. 22 Art and River Chatter

TERRE HAUTE — Art and River Chatter will continue at 5:15 p.m. today with “Clean Up Your Act” — How can we co-exist with the things that support us — farming, heating, power, waste disposal, industry — and still protect our area’s most important natural resource, the Wabash River? Presenters: Dennis Evers (Meridian Bioenergy and Meridian Biotech) and Brad Smith (Indiana Nature Conservancy).

Art Spaces Inc. — Wabash Valley Outdoor Sculpture Collection and Our Green Valley Alliance for Sustainability are co-presenting this series of informal conversations about public art and environmental issues related to the Wabash River. People of all ages are invited to chat about art and the river, and get to know other people through lively discussion. The two presenters kick off the evening with images and ideas to get the conversation started. Beverages and food are available for purchase from the restaurant menu. The location is Logan’s Rib Eye, 100 S. Fruitridge Ave.

Smith has worked in conservation for more than 20 years, doing wetland restoration, conservation lands management and sustainable agriculture in both Florida and New Jersey. He started working in his current role as the lower Wabash and wetlands program director for The Nature Conservancy in March of 2013. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Indiana University in Bloomington and a master’s degree in environmental science from Florida Gulf Coast University.

Evers has spent more than 50 years in the wastewater treatment industry, with the first 12 years being a pollution inspector, then a sewage works manager in the United Kingdom following graduation as a public health reengineer and an applied microbiologist. In 1970, he set up his own consultancy to implement his concept of total resource recovery from organic processing of effluent discharges, creating a zero-waste process. He has designed systems and successfully implemented his technology in over 200 projects worldwide. In 2012, he formed a joint venture with a US commercial group, as Meridian Biotech, to handle the significant interest now being shown in the concept of resource recovery using his technology.
