Oktoberfest celebrates German culture, kicks off downtown today

TERRE HAUTE — The Oktoberfest, a Wabash Valley tradition of hospitality, food, drink and music offered by the German Oberlandler Club since 1973, opens today at the Clabber Girl Festival Marketplace, at Ninth and Cherry streets.

The event begins at 11 a.m. with music by the Crossroads Brass, a well-known local musical group.

Hours for the three-day event are 11 a.m. to midnight on Thursday and Friday, and from 4 p.m. to midnight on Saturday. Admission is free.

Club members prepare and serve German and American foods including grilled brats, chicken, schnitzel, sauerkraut, German potato salad, apple strudel and other desserts. Take-outs are available.

German imported and domestic beers, soft drinks, coffee, pretzels and popcorn complete the menu.

Eddie Korosa’s Boys from Illinois and Joe Polach and his St. Louis Express will be on ,stage with nonstop music for listening and dancing each night beginning at 4 p.m.

Festival proceeds fund the annual Frances Sanders Scholarships and other community projects.
