TERRE HAUTE —
The harmonic blend of Hutsonville, Ill., native Roxie Randle’s voice with Kimber Cleveland sounds instantly natural.
Their vocal pairing shines on the single “This Way,” released independently Wednesday on iTunes.
The duet by Randle and Cleveland — known in duo as As Girls Go — was a few years in the making.
The two Nashville singer-songwriters have been friends for a decade, but started writing and performing together only two years ago.
They took that step carefully. “We value our friendship so much and didn’t want to do anything to change it,” Randle told the Tribune-Star in an email interview, “but the partnership has been great. We ‘get’ each other.”
As Girls Go released their first EP (extended-play) disc last winter, “That’s What She Said: Vol. 1.” They collaborated for the new single, “This Way,” in support of the documentary, “Beyond The Myth: The Truth About Pit Bulls.” Randle and Cleveland wrote the song after viewing the film, inspired by its effort to dispel misconceptions about the dogs.
“But the sentiment of the song applies to all types of loss and heartbreak,” Randle said, citing the chorus — “I knew goodbye could come someday, but I never thought you’d leave me this way.”
The twosome will perform a livestream tonight at 9 p.m. Eastern Time in a “pay-what-you-want” format at www.stageit.com.
With both still in the midst of solo musical careers, their chances to do As Girls Go shows are limited. Randle’s latest video to her song, “Everything I’m Not,” is due out soon, and “We’ve talked about doing a ‘Volume 2’ [to the EP], but we’re so busy touring that it’s hard to find time to record,” Cleveland said. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to make that happen soon.”
Writing for two suits Randle, as well. “When there are two singers, it’s exciting to explore all those vocal possibilities,” she said. “I’ve always been fascinated with harmony, so writing for a duo comes pretty natural for me.”
