Party New Orleans-style at Swope Mardi Gras celebration

TERRE HAUTE — The Swope Art Museum’s fifth annual Mardi Gras celebration is this weekend. Enjoy a visit to the Big Easy on the museum’s third floor from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday.

Dancing will be on tap again, with music provided by D. J. Matt Luecking, while J. Gumbo’s will serve up Cajun and Creole food for party-goers’ enjoyment. Guests can enjoy Hurricanes and other libations from the Copper Bar (cash bar) as well as complimentary treats.

New this year will be a hair competition. Attendees will vote for the best hairstyle among models representing many of Terre Haute’s most popular salons.

In keeping with tradition, fortune tellers will be on hand to give insights into the future. Carnival beads and masks will be given to all attendees as part of the night of fun in old New Orleans.

Candidates for Mardi Gras king and queen are this year competing in pairs, with attendees electing one pair to be the 2014 reigning monarchs of the Swope.

This year’s competitors are Eric and Melissa Brown, Patrick Sims and Tammy Schaffer, and Matt Wayt and Leslie Garcia. The king and queen are elected in part through votes during the festivities and in part through raising the most money for the Swope from a variety of fundraising efforts in the weeks leading up to Mardi Gras.

Last year, Mardi Gras raised more than $56,000 for the museum.

The Art Hoppers, a group of young professionals dedicated to supporting the museum, organizes the annual Swope Mardi Gras. Indiana American Water is sponsoring the event this year. The party is one of many events and programs the Swope offers.

The Swope is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Regular admission is free to the museum.

Tickets to the Mardi Gras party are $30 for members of the Swope and $35 for non-members and are available in advance at the museum and from the king and queen candidates.

A limited number of tickets may be available at the door. For more information call 812-238-1676. The museum at 25 S. Seventh St.
