Explore the battlefields of World War II Oct. 24 at Marshall Library

At 6 p.m. on Oct. 24, the Marshall (Ill.) Public Library will bring the opportunity to explore the battlefields of World War II and meet some of the brave men who were there.

The program features D-Day artifacts from the collection of Dan Crews of Marshall. A film screening of the documentary, “The D-Day Experience,” will follow.

After this, crews will provide insights into the Normandy campaign that add a human element to the history.

Crews will share experiences from his 2012 trip to Normandy and other significant World War II sites. The end of the evening will be open for the group to share comments and remembrances, or to ask questions.

“The Americans on D-Day” provides a real-time look at one of the most momentous battles of World War II. Shot at the actual time of day or night as the events described, each scene features a clock showing when the action took place on June 6, 1944.

The production follows paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne landing in Ste. Mere Eglise, the Rangers scaling the cliffs at La Pointe du Hoc, the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment taking the guns at Brecourt Manor, and the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions wading through the surf on Omaha Beach.

The host of the film is Ellwood von Seibold, a European battlefield guide who runs, climbs and crawls through the European combat zones of World War II. Von Seibold’s narration is punctuated with short archival clips, re-enactments and interviews from World War II veterans sharing their harrowing memories.

Register for the free program at 217-826-2535 or marshallpubliclibrary@gmail.com. The library is at 612 Archer Ave.
