Gain insights into performing arts with ‘Clowes Conversations’

Clowes Memorial Hall at Butler University has introduces a new series, Clowes Conversations, for the 2013-14 season.

The series provides an opportunity for attendees to gain insights into the performing arts and beyond. Each event features an expert on the topic and relates to performances at Clowes. These experiences are designed to be easy to understand, educational and entertaining for all ages.

In “Music Composition” Frank Felice, Butler University professor of composition, electronic music and music theory, will engage Béla Fleck and Brooklyn Rider in a conversation about their composition, commissioned in honor of Clowes’ 50th anniversary, and discusses what influences commissioned composers. The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 14.

In “Theatre Radio Play” actor and teaching artist Will Gould will lead a discussion of radio theater in its prime. The audience will learn how storytelling, sound effects and music helped create the stage for audible theaters throughout American living rooms. The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14.

In “The Architecture of Clowes Hall” local experts and former colleagues of Evans Woollen (in cooperation with Indiana Landmarks and the Indiana Modern Committee) will discuss the effect Clowes Hall had and continues to have in the world of modern architecture. The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Jan. 30.

In “Life of a Dancer,” David Hochoy, Dance Kaleidoscope’s artistic director, will moderate a conversation with members of the Martha Graham Dance Company, engaging them in stories of their lives, how and why they started to dance, where their career paths havw taken them and where their futurea lead. The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. Feb. 5.

“The Music of South Africa” will explore the varied tradition that is South African music with Sally Childs-Helton, ethnomusicologist. Listeners will discover vocal music and the contemporary guitar scene that influences a vibrant dance tradition. The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. March 4.

In “Ballet 101,” James Cramer, community relations manager for Clowes Memorial Hall, will introduce the art form of ballet in a brief history and interactive demonstration. The audience will engage in a discussion, watch video clips and participate in a movement exercise. (Comfortable dress is recommended.) The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. April 8.

Each Clowes Conversations event is free, but a ticket is required. Tickets are available at the Clowes Memorial Hall box office during regular business hours. For more information about Clowes Conversations, visit ClowesHall.org.
