Edgar students’ work on display at Bicentennial Art Center

The Bicentennial Art Center at Paris, Ill., is featuring the creative work of Edgar County junior and senior high students in the Annual Edgar County Student Art Show, open through Sunday, when a reception open to the public will begin at 1 p.m.

The main floor galleries display art projects completed during this school year and selected for inclusion in the show by the students’ art instructors.

Participating schools and their teachers are: Chrisman Junior and Senior High schools, Mary Phipps and Chelsea Vineyard; Crestwood Junior High School, Mary St. Clair; Kansas Junior and Senior High schools, Barbara Markewitz; Mayo Middle School, Partners in Education Art Enrichment Program, Kristi Bosc, program coordinator and art instructor; P.A.T.H. (Paris Area Teachers at Home); Paris Cooperative High School, Carrieann Phegley; St. Mary’s Junior High School, Christi McClain; and Shiloh High Schools, Randi Pollock.

Also on display in the upstairs galleries at the Art Center are colorful works by third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students from Wenz Elementary School, Jessica Mayhugh art instructor.

Works submitted by the junior and senior high students were judged by Hannah Eads, a retired art teacher from Charleston, Ill. During the show’s reception, Mrs. Eads will present the awards to students whose work she has selected in 2- and 3-dimensional areas in both junior and senior high divisions. Award recipients are:

Judge’s Choice 2D: Taylor Ford, Paris Cooperative, “Moteya.”

Jr. High 2D: first, Cindy Torres, Mayo, for “Audrey Hepburn”; second, Ethan Gann, Crestwood, for “Self-Portrait”; third, Emily Hall, P.A.T.H., for “The Dragon”; Honorable Mention, Jennel Rigdon, Kansas, for “Watermill.”

High School 2D: Matt Hawkins, Kansas, for “Fall Homestead”; second, Haylee Buckellew, Shiloh, for “Chad Michael Murray”; third, Alissa Rowell, Paris Cooperative, for an untitled work; Honorable Mention, Mickayla Phillips, Chrisman, for “Vices and Virtues.”

Judge’s Choice 3D: Michael Jones, Kansas Jr. High, for “Just One of the Guys.”

Jr. High 3D: first, Griffin Johnson, Crestwood, for “Blue Gill”; second, Erica Buntain, St.

Mary’s, “Mardi Gras 2013”; third, Kayin Lawson, Mayo, “Giraffe”; Honorable Mention, Conrad Gavin, Kansas, for “Gray Bunny.”

High School 3D: first, Brianna Blair, Paris Cooperative, for “Elmer”; second, Jesse Bristow, Chrisman, for an untitled work; third, Baylee Painter, Shiloh, for “Zig Zag”; Honorable Mention, Deborah Pryle, Shiloh, for “Zistle.”

The Best Overall School Display award was given to Shiloh High School. The school will receive $100, donated by Paris Clinic Pharmacy and Pearman’s Pharmacy to purchase art supplies.

Every student who has artwork on display in the show will receive a participation certificate at the reception.

The Bicentennial Art Center is at 132 S. Central Ave., in Paris, Ill. The center is handicapped accessible, and admission is free. Hours are 10 a.m. to  4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, or patrons can call for a convenient time. Group tours are available upon request and should be scheduled ahead of time by calling the center at 217-466-8130.
