Sustainability Club forming fish from trash; 'Catch of the River' on display April 20-May 5

ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS — In partnership with the Saint Mary-of-the Woods College’s Sustainability Club, the Department of Text & Image is bringing awareness of what is thrown into the Wabash River, with an art installation on campus from April 20 until May 5.

The Sustainability Club recently staged “Operation: Wabashiki” to clean up the area along the west bank of the Wabash River between Terre Haute and West Terre Haute. Art & Design students will use the trash to create “Catch of the River,” an art installation in front of the Rooney Library on the SMWC campus.

The project will represent a fish, literally surrounded with trash, as fish often are in their natural habitat. Visitors will be able to physically walk through the art. The goal of the installation is to communicate the importance of sustainability and protecting our environment. When the installation is dismantled, materials will be recycled.

There will be an opening reception from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday in front of the library.

The event is part of the 2013 Year of the River, a communitywide initiative based in west-central Indiana providing events throughout the year that are focused on the Wabash River.
