Rockville author to recount search for his identity

ROCKVILLE — Claude Britt is scheduled to discuss his book, “He and Him,” at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Rockville Public Library.

The program is free and open to the public.

Britt’s book is an autobiography. As a small boy, the author found his first Indian arrowhead, which led to his later assembling a large private museum of Indian artifacts. He was born into an abusive, dysfunctional family.

Trying to find his own identity, Britt searched for dinosaur bones in Montana, excavated a prehistoric mammouth in Arizona, taught Navajo Indian children on the reservation in Arizona, and worked as a ranger in national parks.

During his adventures he stepped (barefooted) on a tarantula in Arkansas, sat down in a nest of scorpions in Wyoming and was bitten by a rattlesnake in New Mexico.

Britt grew up in Ohio on a farm and in a country store. He earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bowling Green State University. He has published hundreds of popular articles about American Indians and technical articles on Midwestern archaeology. He now lives in Rockville.

Books will be available for purchase and signing at the presentation.
